Cozy & Local Things to Do in Florence in Winter That You’ll Love

Dreaming of a cozy Italian winter getaway, but wondering what that really looks like? Once the seasons start to change, there are so many wonderful things to do in Florence in the winter — your itinerary will be full. Winter is truly a magical time to visit the city. Think fewer crowds, cooler weather, and festive holiday décor and activities throughout Florence.

As someone who recently moved to Florence, winter has quickly become one of my favorite times of year in the city. From cozy indoor experiences to seasonal events and local traditions, I’m sharing all of my favorite winter activities in Florence — the ones that truly make this season special.

If you’re planning a winter trip, I break down weather, crowds, and what to expect in my full Winter in Florence guide.

Cozy & Indoor Things to Do in Florence in Winter

Visit Giunti Odeon – Libreria e Cinema

Giunti Odeon is a historic theater turned bookstore and cinema, and it’s one of the most magical places to warm up during the winter in Florence. As you enter, you’ll find a beautiful bookstore on the ground level — perfect for Christmas shopping or browsing for a new book or journal.

Be sure to head upstairs to the theater-style seating, where films are regularly shown. Many movies are played in their original language, making this a favorite among locals, expats, and digital nomads. Whether you’re watching a film or simply soaking in the atmosphere, this is a wonderful way to escape the cold on a winter evening in Florence.

Spend an Afternoon at a Spa or Nail Salon with a View

Winter is the perfect excuse to indulge in a little self-care, and Florence has some truly special options. One of my favorite winter activities is spending time at Le Spa, which offers day passes to their luxury spa facilities. Think wet and dry saunas, steam rooms, and a gorgeous whirlpool area — all tucked away from the busy streets of the city.

Another favorite cozy activity is booking a pedicure at The Parlour, one of the most beautiful nail salons in Florence. Located right along the Arno River, the salon offers stunning views of the water and Ponte Vecchio while you relax and get pampered. It’s such a uniquely Florentine way to spend a winter afternoon.

Cozy Up in a Wine Bar or Enoteca

Florence’s wine bars feel especially inviting in winter. Locals gather here for slow evenings, good conversation, and delicious Tuscan wines. You’ll find cozy enotecas throughout the city, perfect for an aperitivo or a relaxed nightcap.

I recommend ordering a glass of Chianti Classico with a few crostini — simple, comforting, and very local. My personal favorites are Enoteca Natalino for its cozy atmosphere and incredible crostini, and First Glass for its excellent wine selection and beautiful views of the Arno and Ponte Vecchio.

Take a Cooking Class (The Ultimate Winter Activity)

What better place to learn how to cook than Italy? Winter is the perfect time to sign up for a cooking class and learn a new skill while staying warm indoors. Many cooking classes in Florence focus on handmade pasta, traditional Tuscan recipes, and classic Italian desserts.

My personal favorite cooking class is with 360 Experiences. You’ll meet a small group and start the day shopping for fresh ingredients at a local market. From there, you head up to a rooftop cooking space with 360-degree views of Florence — including a stunning view of the Duomo. You’ll learn how to make bruschetta, handmade pasta, and tiramisu, then enjoy everything you’ve made over a beautiful dinner with your group. In my opinion, this is an absolute must-do while visiting Florence in winter.

Visit Museums and Churches — Without the Crowds

Florence is home to some of the world’s most famous museums, and winter is hands-down the best time to explore them. With fewer tourists, you can take your time and truly enjoy the art and history.

Art lovers should visit the Uffizi Gallery to see masterpieces like The Birth of Venus, and the Accademia Gallery to admire Michelangelo’s David. History lovers will enjoy Palazzo Medici Riccardi, the former home of the powerful Medici family.

If you’re more interested in architecture and atmosphere, don’t miss Florence’s incredible churches. Instead of waiting in long lines for the Duomo, consider visiting San Lorenzo or Santa Croce, both of which feature stunning frescoes and architecture. Winter crowds are much lighter, making this the perfect season to explore — just be sure to check holiday hours in advance.

Things to do in Florence in Winter: Seasonal & Winter-Only Experiences

Santa Croce Christmas Market

To kick off the holiday season, Piazza Santa Croce transforms into a festive Christmas market. Here you’ll find local vendors selling everything from Christmas ornaments and décor to artisanal jewelry and gifts.

A visit wouldn’t be complete without trying the food. Sip on mulled wine, enjoy warm pierogies or goulash, and finish with Nutella waffles or chimney cake. It’s the perfect place for a cozy winter stroll in Florence.

Passeggiata to See the Christmas Lights

Florence truly shines during the holiday season. The narrow cobblestone streets are lined with beautiful Christmas lights, creating a magical atmosphere throughout the city. Spend an evening wandering through the streets, browsing holiday shop windows, and soaking in the festive vibe.

Be sure to stop by Florence’s main piazzas — Piazza del Duomo, Piazza della Repubblica, and Piazzale Michelangelo — to admire the large Christmas trees and decorations.

Pro tip: Florence hosts a Christmas tree lighting ceremony each year, lighting up trees in multiple piazzas. You can walk from piazza to piazza and experience the city coming alive for the holidays. Check local listings for dates and times.

Light Up Florence

In recent years, Florence has added stunning light projection shows throughout the city during winter. These artistic displays often appear at Ponte Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria, blending modern art with historic landmarks. They make the perfect addition to an evening passeggiata and are especially beautiful after dark.

New Year’s Eve in Florence

Florence is a wonderful city to ring in the New Year. Events take place across the city, often with live music in different piazzas. While there isn’t always an official fireworks display, many smaller fireworks go off throughout the city.

For the best views, head up to Piazzale Michelangelo, or choose a cozy local bar to celebrate with friends and locals. Everything is walkable, which makes New Year’s Eve in Florence feel relaxed and festive at the same time.

Christmas in Florence

After spending Christmas in Florence myself, I can confidently say it’s a perfect place for a low-key holiday. The city feels slower and more peaceful, with beautiful lights and decorations setting the mood.

Many shops close as locals spend time with family, but plenty of restaurants remain open for holiday lunches and dinners — just be sure to book reservations early. Christmas Day is also a wonderful time to visit the Duomo area, where crowds are minimal and the Christmas tree feels almost like it’s just for you.

Day Trips & Excursions from Florence in Winter

Go Wine Tasting in Chianti

Wine tasting in Chianti

Winter is an amazing time to book a wine tasting tour in Chianti, Tuscany’s most famous wine region. Just about an hour from Florence, you’ll be transported to rolling hills, vineyards, and postcard-worthy scenery. I got super lucky and we had the most beautiful weather, complete with sunshine and clear skies in both October AND December!

With fewer visitors, tastings feel more intimate and relaxed. I recommend booking a tour that visits at least two wineries to experience different styles. GetYourGuide offers great options, and Your Vino is a personal favorite for smaller, more customized tours that visit local, family-run wineries.

Winter Trip to Venice

Gondola in Venice Italy

Venice is only a two-hour train ride from Florence, making it an easy and rewarding winter day trip. Winter is one of the best times to visit Venice, as crowds are much smaller and the city feels more atmospheric.

Bundle up and explore the canals, wander through quiet neighborhoods, and consider booking a food tour to sample local Venetian specialties. Even a gondola ride feels more special in winter, without the summer crowds.

Is Winter a Good Time to Visit Florence?

My honest answer: yes, absolutely. Winter is one of the most underrated times to visit Florence. If you’re flexible with the weather and open to slower travel, you’ll be rewarded with fewer crowds, cozy experiences, and a more local feel.

From Christmas markets and festive lights to quiet museums and warm wine bars, Florence in winter feels intimate and magical. If you’re thinking about booking a winter trip to Florence — do it. You’ll experience the city in a way most travelers never do.
