You are more than your metrics

You are more than your metrics

There are so many metrics that we measure as business owners. We measure our follower count, our website views, email list size,  our likes and comments, and the list goes on and on. It is important to remember to take a step back and remind yourself that you are more than your metrics. Your worth is not defined by the number of followers you have or the amount of sales you made. You bring so much more to the table!

So the first thing I want to say is that measuring our metrics as business owners is important.

We should know our numbers. We should know if our marketing strategy is working if we are getting a return for the amount of time we are spending creating content. We should know our conversion rates for our webinars, and we should be focusing on growing our audience and making sure that these efforts are all paying off, otherwise, what’s the point? Right?

So I want to say that knowing your numbers is important, and we should not be burying our heads in the sand and not keeping track, that is our job as the CEO of our business is to know our metrics so that we can make informed decisions about our business.

However, there is another side to that and it’s something that I see a lot of other online business owners fall prey to, and I have fallen into this trap myself, and that is to start letting those numbers mean something about you and your success as a business owner.

It is easy to see a number and make it mean something about ourselves, right? We start to tell ourselves stories like we don’t have enough Instagram followers so therefore people won’t see us as an expert. Or we don’t have a big enough email list so therefore we can’t make any sales. Or we posted something and it didn’t have a high engagement rate so that means it must have been a crappy post. Or you didn’t hit your sales goals therefore you are a terrible entrepreneur and your business idea isn’t going to work.

I am sure you can think of plenty of other examples of stories you have told yourself when you started tracking and taking a look at your numbers because I know I have!

And getting into these funks is normal, everyone has been there from time to time.

I want to remind you that it is not what the metrics say that determines your success, it’s the way you analyze and respond to those numbers that makes all the difference.

Let’s say every Monday you sit down and you track your metrics for the week. You track your follower growth, list size growth, number of opt-ins, number of sales, and so on. And let’s say that the numbers are not where you would like them to be.

You have two options.

Option 1, you can let your metrics something about you and your business and let it mean that you are a failure, you are not good enough, you’re not doing enough, whatever it is.

OR option 2, you can say, okay, these are just numbers, this is just raw data. Let me interpret this in a constructive way that will allow me to make decisions and take informed action this week so that I can improve, because I know I am capable of success because I know I am capable of growth and because I am committed to improving and never giving up on my business goals.

Remember, your numbers do not define you. You get to choose the way you interpret those numbers and you get to choose how you respond to them. You can let them mean something about your ability to succeed or you can simply let them be data that is going to help you continue to grow.

So I hope this encourages you to start tracking your metrics if you have been dreading it and putting it off. I know looking at your numbers can be scary, but you also have the power to let it not feel scary. You can choose to let it mean nothing about your ability to succeed and simply just be a number. Everyone starts somewhere so my homework for you this week if you haven’t done so already is to track your metrics, get your starting points and continue to track and watch the numbers grow as you continue to take informed action towards your business goals!
